Why Early Detection Matters
Trees are remarkably resilient, but they aren't immune to disease, pests, or environmental stress. By the time a tree looks completely dead, it's usually too late to save it. Recognizing the early warning signs of tree distress can mean the difference between a simple treatment and a costly removal.
1. Changes in Leaves
The leaves are often the first indicator of a problem. Look for:
- Premature leaf drop: Losing leaves in spring or summer when they should be full.
- Discoloration: Yellowing, browning, or spotting on leaves outside of normal autumn changes.
- Stunted growth: Leaves that are unusually small or sparse.
2. Bark Abnormalities
A tree's bark is like its skin. If you notice large cracks, deep splits, or areas where the bark is peeling off and not growing back, the tree may be suffering from a fungal infection or severe stress. Cankers (sunken, dead areas of bark) are also a major red flag.
3. Fungal Growth
Mushrooms or conks growing at the base of the trunk or directly on the wood are a strong indication of internal decay. While some fungi are harmless, many types signify that the tree is rotting from the inside out, which can make it structurally unsound and dangerous.
4. Dead or Falling Branches
It's normal for trees to occasionally lose small twigs, but if you're seeing large, dead branches (often called "widow-makers") hanging in the canopy or falling to the ground, the tree is declining. This is a significant safety hazard that requires immediate professional pruning or removal.
5. Root Problems
Roots are out of sight, but they shouldn't be out of mind. Signs of root trouble include:
- Soil heaving or cracking around the base of the tree.
- Fungus growing on or near the roots.
- A sudden, noticeable lean to the tree.
What to Do
If you spot any of these signs, don't wait. Contact a certified arborist immediately. At Evergreen Pro Tree Services, we can diagnose the issue and recommend the best course of action to either treat the tree or safely remove it before it causes damage to your property.
